We should all be independently wealthy. Don’t you think?
I just came back from an extended holiday at the cottage. After weeks of sleeping in, reading the paper cover to cover, playing "Crazy Eights" with our kids, who wants to go back to work? Not me.
And I love what I do.
What's the point? Two points. One, coming back from holidays is hard even when you like what you do. Two, few of us are independently wealthy (unfortunately) but we should all act like we are.
I love what I do but I don't love everything that I do. If I were independently wealthy, I would do less of the things I don't like. It may seem obvious to you but a thought occurred to me last Tuesday, "I can do less of what I don't like now".
I thought about this all last week. I knew immediately the work that I really love to do.
I love two things. One, I love meeting with clients to help them solve issues. I love to help existing clients I know well and I love to help new clients I am just getting to know. Two, I love helping clients grow and become even more successful. I particularly like working with senior leaders who have teams to manage and I particularly like working with very talented young leaders.
Time to act like I am independently wealthy. I am revisiting all of my current work with the statement below in mind.
"What work would I do if I were independently wealthy?"
Time now for action. I am either re-contracting work or eliminating work that is just no fun. I am working to spend more time on what I love. I am working to increase time with clients I enjoy and spend less time on projects I find frustrating. Speaking of that, today I slept in, read the paper cover to cover and am just about to sit down and play cards with the kids. It is Sunday but today it feels like I'm independently wealthy.
